The Last Valley Drive-In Theatre

Art - Historical Theaters

Wes-mer Theatre

It appears that the era of drive-in theatres is something of the past, something that went away with bell bottoms. Well, not in Mercedes, TX. Wes-mer Theatre still offers a taste of the past. This antique looking drive-in is a great place to enjoy a movie with a loved one or with your family.

On a wet Wednesday September night, I managed, for the first time in over three decades, to experience a movie at a drive-in theatre. I remember the days of placing a speaker on our window. Now you just have to tune into a radio station to hear the sound. The sound is very clear as well as the image on the screen. The Valley consistently provides cool, fresh nights. It is a treat to lower your window, kick your seat back, and enjoy a movie in the privacy of your car.

Wes-mer drive-in opened in the 1940s, but closed in 1984. In 1994 the drive-in was resurrected. It adds a lot of character to the historic looking city of Mercedes. The back of the screen can be seen from the expressway. I highly recommend this drive-in. It is an old American tradition that can bring the family close together at a minimal cost. The place feels safe and the restrooms are clean.
