What goes on at a flea market?
Don Wes Flea Market
Don Wes Flea Market
Watch the Ohio State vs Michigan football game or go to the flea market to buy honey? Typically that answer would default to football even before the question is finished. Not on this day. I have always wanted to know what goes on at a flea market so I tagged along with the in-laws. On this Saturday morning we were going to a "nice" flea market - according to my mother-in-law. I wasn't sure what that meant until we got there and flags were posted at the entrance proclaiming a safe and clean place. I guess some flea markets are not safe nor clean.
I had always envisioned the flea market being like a massive garage sale with a bootlegging twist. Surprisingly, it wasn't like a garage sale. Paved streets were properly aligned with legit and talented vendors. The streets were filled with Winter Texans looking for a good bargain. Don Wes Flea Market is in fact a clean and safe flea market. It reminded me of shopping at one of our nearby Mexican border towns but without the chicklet-selling kids, breastfeeding mothers begging for money and the massive pot holes.
The 45-minute journey around the complex was enjoyable. I mean, where else can I buy fruit, a cowboy hat, home-made ice scream, kettle corn, plants, honey, antique tools, movies, jewelry, clothes, cards, marbles, eat lunch and listen to some live music without having to worry about passports or terrorist threats? Add inexpensive liquor vendors to our local flea markets and I am there every cool front.
The fun part about my experience was how my camera really made a lot of vendors nervous. I am not sure why.
