Must save my backyard! Part II
| Gardening - Lawn Care |
Week one consisted of cleaning up the yard, fixing the sprinkler system, spreading compost (fertilization) throughout the yard, and covering up the potholes. On week two we turned our attention to planting new grass.
Our first instinct was to go and buy pallets of grass. This was a quick and easy way to solve our problem. Although it seemed like a logical situation, we opted not to go that route. We wanted to plant from the bottom up instead of from the top down.
Like most junior high kids, we decided to do an experiment. The experiment was to test different products to properly grow the desired grass. Our first stop was the Home Depot in Pharr, TX. There we purchased a product called Vigoro - Ultra Turf. Next we stopped at The Valley Garden Center where we purchased 2lbs ($5.98) of Ryegrass Seed. Two old trays that were lying around the garage were volunteered for this experiment. We punctured some holes underneath the trays, filled the tray with soil, and concluded by planting both sets of seeds in different trays. After three days of out in the sun and constant watering, the results showed a significant difference. The Ryegrass was a clear winner; easily outdoing the Home Depot product.
The week was concluded by planting the Ryegrass Seed in the areas that were in dire need of grass. Then we covered the entire back yard with one more coat of compost. At this point we will let the sun and the sprinkler system do the rest of the work for the week.
