Iwo Jima Monument
This stunning outdoor sculpture was donated to the Marine Military Academy by the renowned artist and sculptor, Dr. Felix de Weldon. It depicts the raising of the U.S. flag on Iwo Jima during World War II. The monument is the original full-sized creation and was used for the casting of the monument erected at Arlington Cemetery outside Washington, D.C. After completion of the monument this sculpture was placed in storage until the early 1980's when Dr. de Weldon donated it to the Academy. Donations were collected to fund the transport and reassembly of the monument, which was supervised by Dr. de Weldon himself. On April 16, 1982 the monument was officially dedicated.
The monument has a special meaning to the Rio Grande Valley since the marine on the base of flag is a Weslaco native, Harlon Henry Block. Harlon Block himself is buried at the memorial site.
